Is your hair summer-ready? We’re sharing five summer hair care tips that will keep your locks healthy, moisturized, and gorgeous all summer long. And of course, feel free to contact our team for specific product recommendations or customized counsel on your summer hair care routine.
1. Cover it up
Often we’re vigilant about protecting our skin from the sun, but we forget to give any attention to protecting our hair. The sun’s powerful UV rays can damage and dry out your hair, fade your hair color, and burn the scalp. Before you head out for a day in the sun, pack a stylish wide-brimmed hat or a fun baseball cap that covers your entire head. You can also use a shampoo, conditioner or leave-in spray that has UV protection built in to protect your hair (and your hair color) from sun damage. Coconut oil also has just enough natural SPF to protect your hair and hydrate it, too.
2. Keep it hydrated
Your hair can get extra dry in the summer, because the salt content in seawater draws water out of your hair (and skin), and pool chlorine strips the hair of its natural protective oils. Keep your hair hydrated by giving it a quick rinse or splash of water before you swim, which will protect it from absorbing too much saltwater or chlorine. You can also use coconut oil to infuse moisture in your hair before you swim, or choose a shampoo that has moisturizing ingredients added (like aloe vera, argan oil, coconut oil, etc) that effectively clean your hair without removing its natural moisture.
3. Cool it on the hot tools
It’s always wise to limit the amount of heat you use on your hair, because any kind of heat (especially from hot tools) inflicts some level of damage to your hair.Excessive heat can strip your hair of the natural oils it needs and dry it out (which we already know is a struggle in the summer). Since you’ll be spending extra time in the sun, you can balance out the heat exposure by giving the hot tools a break. Try letting your hair go natural and rock the beach wave! We’d be happy to recommend products that will help your natural hair thrive.
4. Rinse, but don’t over-shampoo
Of course, we sweat more in the summer, so showering is a must. But there’s no need to shampoo and condition every time you shower. After you swim in chlorine or saltwater, do a quick rinse to remove the salt or chemicals. The right rhythm for shampooing and conditioning depends on your hair type and texture (we can help you determine this). If you’re really feeling brave (or hot), rinse your hair with cold water after you swim. Cold water keeps the hair cuticle closed and will keep your color from fading – plus it adds a natural shininess to your hair.
5. Don’t forget a trim
It’s always fun to grow out your hair and just ‘let it go’ in the summer. But a healthy, regular trim can keep your hair growing and healthy, so keep your trim on the calendar so we can remove any dead or dry ends and keep your locks strong.
